Melburnians have trembled through their coldest consecutive mornings for 17 years.
The temperature dropped below 2 degrees for a second morning on Monday.
The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 1.9 degrees at 6.01am, warmer than Sunday’s low of 1.4 but offering little solace to those facing a temperature that felt like minus 1.5.
The temperature dropped to 1.8 degrees at 7.15am, which felt like minus 1.9.
Senior forecaster Scott Williams said the previous record was set in 1997, with readings of 0.3 and 0.8 on August 4 and 5.
But it’s not time for balaclavas in the city just yet. Approaching clouds will warm things up to a forecast 6 degrees tomorrow morning ahead of predicted rain later in the week.
‘‘This morning will be the last really cold one,’’ Mr Williams said.
The cold snap has come as a shock to many Melburnians, who have been enjoying a milder-than-average winter.
June was 2 degrees above the long-term average, while July recorded an average of 14.7 degrees, 1.2 above the long-term average.
Mr Williams said August was still milder than the average so far, despite this week’s cold mornings.
Victorians elsewhere in the state also woke to another crisp morning.
Ballarat recorded a low of minus 4.5, Charlton minus 3.1, Horsham minus 3.7, Coldstream minus 3.4, Bendigo minus 3.9, Falls Creek minus 4.7, Mount Buller minus 7.1 and Mount Hotham minus 6.9.
This morning’s Melbourne chill is forecast to be followed by a sunny day, with a maximum of 15.
