Ardeer: Woman allegedly burnt in assault; man in custody

A woman has been seriously burnt and a man is in police custody after a violent assault in Ardeer.

Police were called to an address in Maxweld Street about 11pm on Sunday.

Police spokeswoman Melissa Seach said the woman was found outside the property with third-degree burns to her upper body.

She was taken to The Alfred hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.

Police searched throughout the night for a 22-year-old man, who returned to the property at 4.45am on Monday.

He was arrested and transported to The Alfred, where he is being treated for burns to his hands and arms.

Senior Constable Seach said police hoped to interview the the man later today.

It is not known if the man and woman lived together but it is believed they were known to each other.
