Brimbank commuters get better bus services as network expanded

Public Transport Victoria has expanded Brimbank’s bus network, adding an extra 310 services a week across the city.

The changes, in effect from July 27, include:

■ More services to newly serviced areas including Sunshine West, Sunshine North and St Albans, and a new route 420 delivering high-frequency and direct buses to Sunshine West, Deer Park, Cairnlea, St Albans, Kings Park, Delahey and Sydenham

■ Higher-frequency services, with buses every
20 minutes on 10 routes during peak periods and more off-peak services on routes 471 and 408

■ More direct routes to key destinations such as Watergardens, Brimbank Shopping Centre and Sunshine.

All routes will operate seven days a week, including public holidays.

The changes follow a Brimbank and Melton bus service review conducted by PTV last year.

Delahey Action Group spokesman David Anderson welcomed the upgrades.

“It seems to be a positive move, particularly the new route 420 because for so long there hasn’t been the ability for people to go along Kings Road,’’ he said.

“We had areas where people didn’t have any access to services. This tends to even that out, so there’s a reasonable balance. What we’d like to see in the long term is more frequency of some of the buses.”

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said many bus routes and timetables had not been changed in years.

“With bigger shopping centres, new train services, expanded residential development and changed travel patterns, the bus network was ready to be revised to better meet community needs,’’ Mr Elsbury said.

“An extra 45,000 Brimbank residents will soon be within 800 metres of bus services that run at least every 20 minutes in peak periods, and an extra 18,000 residents will be within 400 metres of buses that run every
day of the year.”
