Shooting death goes to trial

A Sunshine man accused of the shooting death of his former girlfriend at his parents’ home has been sent for trial. Nelson Lai, 34, pleaded not guilty at his committal hearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court last week to the murder of Rekiah O’Donnell, 22, who died from a gunshot wound to her head at a home in Sunshine North on October 11 last year. The committal hearing was told Lai said to his father: ‘’I didn’t know there was one in it’’ while the younger man and his mother tried to revive Ms O’Donnell. Magistrate Barry Schultz remanded Lai to the Supreme Court on July 18.

Substance thrown in home invasion

A substance police feared was hazardous was thrown in a man’s face in a home invasion in Albanvale on June 19. Police said two adults and two children were home when two masked men forced their way into the Evergreen Avenue property about 2am. A 30-year-old man confronted the intruders, who threw an unknown substance in his face. Police called in hazardous material crews, who declared the substance to be safe. The man was not hurt and nothing was stolen.
