Wild weather: Brimbank SES flooded with calls for help

UPDATE: Brimbank SES has received over 100 calls for assistance in just over 24 hours as volunteers remain on high alert.

From midnight on Tuesday until midday 2pm Thursday, the Brimbank unit received 135 calls for assistance form the Brimbank community.

50 related to building damage and 77 calls were regarding fallen trees.

“Three  response vehicles with support of a four-person incident management team have been working tirelessly around the clock since the 9am yesterday [Tuesday],” SES spokesman Brad Dalgleish said.

“We’ve had three or four houses which have sustained significant damage from fallen trees. And several cars have been damaged too.

“We also had to attend the fatal incident on the Calder Highway this morning.”

A man was killed on the Calder Freeway after being struck by a truck in Keilor North just after 5am.

“Current forecasts indicate that more severe is on the way on Friday and Saturday with potentially strong winds and rainfall,” Dalgleish said.

“We ask that if residents can please be patient. Our volunteers are working through requests for assistance. Based on our workload, we should have all requests cleared by 4pm today [Wednesday].

“Safety is paramount,  to assist with this we request that people secure loose items from their yards including trampolines, garden furniture or anything that could potentially be a flying object.”
