Eight rounds into the Western Region Football League’s division 1 season, Deer Park’s quest for back-to-back premierships couldn’t be in better shape.
The Lions have been dominant through the season’s first half and sit on top of the ladder with a perfect 8-0 record.
The club’s closest challenger is Werribee Districts, six points back.
Further highlighting its dominance, Deer Park’s percentage is more than 100 points better than any other side in the division.
After losing just three games last year, Deer Park coach Marc Bullen believes the 2014 outfit is even stronger.
“A lot of the guys that were moved on … they have played in premierships in other suburban leagues, so they were probably getting towards the end of their careers,” Bullen said.
“We’ve been able to refresh the side with some young players who are keen and want to improve and show their ability. Those guys, combined with the AFL-experienced boys and the guys that were there last year … it’s a really good group.”
Despite huge totals being scored by the Lions’ forward line, their backline has impressed Bullen the most.
Deer Park has conceded only 346 points for the season at an average of just 43.8 points a game.
“That is unheard of in footy terms,’’ Bullen said.
‘‘If we can continue to trek down that line, I’m confident we can go pretty well.”
After the amazing start, the Lions are focused on maintaining their No.1 ranking to earn a week off before their first final.
With matches against top-five teams Hoppers Crossing, St Albans and Werribee Districts in the next three weeks, three wins would all but seal top spot.
“If we can get another win against Werribee in three weeks’ time, I’m pretty sure we will be able to secure that first week off in the finals,’’ Bullen said.
“It’s a long year so to be able to get that one week off would make a massive difference.
“We’re trying to get the right balance and I still don’t believe I have it. It’s pleasing that we can play so many different players who can be so versatile in this side.’’
