Big V basketball: Second-half barrage sinks Keilor Thunder

It was a tough day at the office for Keilor Thunder’s Big V division 2 men’s basketball side, which went down to Keysborough by 14 points on Saturday.

The Thunder was quick out of the blocks and took an early two-point lead at quarter-time.

But, playing in front of its home crowd, Keysborough hit back and turned the deficit into a three-point lead going into the final term.

From there, the Cougars stepped up their game, outscoring Keilor 25-14 in the last quarter to seal a 79-65 win.

It was an even scoring performance for the Thunder, with Scott Drysdale and Mitchell Lukey each putting up 12 points.

They were well supported by Bradley Courts (10 points, eight rebounds).

Keysborough’s Jackson Houpt proved the most dangerous player on the court though and finished the match with a game-high 22 points.

Things weren’t any better for the Keilor women’s team, which lost to the Geelong Supercats by 22 points.

Playing at the Geelong Arena, the Supercats got off to a flying start and outscored Keilor 17-8 in the first term.

The Thunder found its groove in the second quarter and started to create some scoreboard pressure.

But after cutting the margin to seven points by the main break, Keilor was unable to maintain its momentum as Geelong hit back.

The Supercats were outstanding in the third term, winning the quarter 24-6 and going on to secure a 65-43 victory.

Jayne-Maree Sant worked hard for Keilor, scoring 15 points and pulling in five rebounds. Next best for the Thunder was Jessica Francke with nine points.

For Geelong, Kylie Morrissy and Ebony Rolph shared the scoring duties with 14 points each, while Charmaine Ferguson (12) was also solid.

Keilor slipped from fourth to fifth on the division 1 ladder.

The Thunder has a 7-6 record and is seven points behind fourth-placed La Trobe City Energy.

When round 12 begins on June 14, the men will host the North East Bushrangers, while the women hit the road to face the Werribee Devils.
