Kevin Bourke has had many jobs over his life – but he reckons this may just be the best one yet.
Rain, hail or shine, Mr Bourke can be seen manning the Hovell Street crossing outside Deer Park North Primary School for every school pick-up and drop-off.
The 67-year-old has been a lollipop man for the past decade and signed up to do something in, and for, the community.
Mr Bourke said listening to some of the interesting stories the children come up with was one of the best parts of the job, while Melbourne’s four seasons in a day sometimes tested his mettle.
“None of us like standing in freezing rain and freezing winds,” he said.
Mr Bourke has worked as a mechanic, diesel fitter, laboratory technician, occupational health and safety administrator and driver for a Mercedes Benz dealership before becoming a school crossing supervisor.
“This is a very responsible job, and an extremely rewarding one as well,” Mr Bourke said.
He encouraged anyone interested in becoming a school crossing supervisor to give it a go. “This job could very well be the most rewarding job you’ve ever had.”
