Sunshine holds grim record over assaults

Sixty-four assaults in Sunshine over the past three years have involved knives or edged weapons, new Victoria Police statistics reveal.

Star Weekly has learned there were also 29 assaults involving knives or edged weapons in the Cairnlea, Caroline Springs, Burnside and Deer Park area over the past three years.

In the same period, there were 29 knifings in Sydenham and Taylors Hill, and 20 in Braybrook.

The statistics were released as Visy Cares Hub general manager Karen Hart called for a range of measures, and not just CCTV surveillance, to curb violence against women.

Mrs Hart said men needed to take greater responsibility for their anger.

“More money needs to be provided for programs that directly target education and raise awareness for young people,” she said.

“Sunshine does have a reputation as a high-crime area and the recent violent incidents indicate a general unrest and fear after the area had been relatively peaceful for a few years. It’s a deep concern that the recent tragedies have brought to the fore again a problem that appeared to have settled for a while.”
