Delahey resident donates his car to charity, and wants others to follow

Thomas Alberto is donating his car to charity.

The 28-year-old Delahey resident is giving away his beloved 2007 black Toyota Yaris as part of a self-imposed challenge to do a charitable act every day for 30 days.

The car, which will be going to the Kids Under Cover Donate Your Car program, was his final charitable act.

During the 30 days, Mr Alberto also signed up for the St Vinnies Sleepout, donated blood, became an organ donor, took part in the Good Friday appeal, donated cans of food to Open House and sponsored two children, a tiger and a seeing-eye dog.

“I wanted to do something different,” he said. “People my age, especially on Facebook, have been posting self-improvement challenges, but I wanted to take that to the next level and do some good for someone other than myself. When I started this challenge, I made a list of what I wanted to do and I had this car at home that wasn’t being used any more and I thought, why not give it to a good cause?”

Mr Alberto hopes to encourage more people to follow his lead and plans on setting up a blog detailing his experience. “If I could do all this good in 30 days, imagine what 10, 15, 20 people could do,” he said.

Mr Alberto’s car will be auctioned off with proceeds going to building homes and providing scholarships and mentors for homeless and at-risk young people.
