Sunshine Park: New tennis courts a net gain, says club

Sunshine Park Tennis Club is all smiles after Brimbank council put out tenders for two new courts at Parsons Reserve.

The council, which committed funding to the project in its 2013-14 budget, is progressing with plans that include two new courts to add to the club’s four-court base, plus new fencing and lighting.

Tender documents reveal the possibility of another two courts in a separate enclosure south of the Wright Street site, subject to budget constraints.

Sunshine Park head coach Craig Vaughan said the courts would boost the club’s profile and playing capacity.

“Basically what it means is that we will retain all of our members,” Vaughan said. “They are using the courts that we have now, plus the local school courts down the road.

‘‘We can bring back all our members to play at the tennis club.

‘‘It will make a better environment and help us develop the club.”

Sunshine Park, which has more than 100 members, was established in 1995.

The upgrade continues a remarkable turn-around for the club, which was struggling to attract players just three years ago.

However, thanks to the hard work of Vaughan and the club’s committee, Sunshine Park has successfully rebuilt itself, with a focus on introducing the sport to multicultural groups across the western suburbs.
