STATE: Melbourne Rail Link changes

How the Melbourne Rail Link will change your train journey.

Sunbury/Cranbourne/Pakenham

Current: Sunbury and Cranbourne/Pakenham are separate lines. Both travel through the City Loop.

Plans: The Sunbury line and the Cranbourne/Pakenham lines will become one end to end rail line, with a connection to Melbourne Airport. This service will no longer travel through the City Loop and will stop at Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations. Passengers will need to interchange to access the City Loop.

Craigieburn/Upfield

Current: Shares tracks with Sunbury lines services and travels through the City Loop.

Plans: Will continue travelling to all City Loop stations, no longer sharing a tunnel with the Sunbury line. It will include access to Flemington Racecourse and the Showgrounds.

Werribee/Williamstown

Current: This line only stops at Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations on the city loop and is connected to the Frankston line.

Plans: Will continue travelling through Southern Cross and Flinders Street and will connect with the Sandringham line rather than Frankston. Passengers will need to interchange at Flinders Street, Footscray, North Melbourne, Richmond, Southern Cross or South Yarra to access the City Loop other lines.

Glen Waverley

Current: Travels to all stations on the city loop.

Plans: This line will no longer go through the City Loop but will travel direct to Flinders Street. Passengers will need to interchange at Flinders Street, Richmond or Burnley, to access other City Loop stations. Will no longer share tracks with Lilydale and Belgrave lines.

Lilydale/Belgrave

Current: Travels on the same Loop tunnel as the Glen Waverley line and stops at all City Loop stations. It includes Alamein line services.

Plans: This line will no longer travel through Flinders Street but will stop at all other City Loop stations. It will be linked to Frankston via the Melbourne Rail Link, the Napthine government’s new underground tunnel. This line will include new underground stations at Fishermans Bend (Montague) and Domain. There will also be new underground platforms at Southern Cross and South Yarra. Passengers on this line wanting to get to Flinders Street Station will need to interchange at Southern Cross or Richmond. Alamein services will remain on this line.

South Morang/Hurstbridge

Current: Runs through the City Loop.

Plans: No change.

Sandringham Line

Current: Travels direct to Flinders Street Station, does not go through the City Loop.

Plans: Will connect with the Werribee/Williamstown lines, running via Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations. Will not go through the City Loop.
