Brimbank Little Athletes chase big dreams at national level

Two junior athletes from Brimbank continued their strong form while representing the state in a national competition at the weekend.

Sunshine’s Junior Mabia collected gold in both the 100 metre and 200 metre events, and bronze in the 4 x 100 metre relay at the Australian Little Athletics championships in Albert Park on Saturday.

“We’d like to keep him in athletics and away from soccer, he’s got a big future,” under-13s little athletics coach Shane Bertrand said.

“He’s a very talented athlete.”

In March, Junior, 13, won gold in the 100m and 200m at the state track and field championships. He also broke the Victorian record in the 100m.

Jamieson Battiftella, from the Brimbank Little Athletics Centre, came ninth in the high jump, seventh in the 1500m walk, and won bronze in the triple jump at the weekend.

Jamieson won gold in the triple jump and silver in the high jump at the state titles.

“She had the hardest program as her events clashed. She had to compete in all her events within two hours,” Mr Bertrand said. “It wasn’t ideal.”

“They’re both very committed athletes. They’re very good team members. It’s a small team of 11 boys and 11 girls, and they’ve got great leadership qualities as well. .”
