HAWTHORN EAST: ‘Queenie’ shares stage with Joss Stone

Hawthorn East singer/songwriter Elise Kausman (a.k.a Queenie) has social media to thank for a brief spot onstage next to soul singer Joss Stone at the Palais Theatre last month.

The 26-year-old issued a musical plea to Stone via YouTube, begging the British songstress for the chance to sing with her at her only Melbourne show on April 17.

The clip features Kausman singing her own lyrics to Stone’s cover of Some Kind of Wonderful, originally by Soul Brothers Six. Stone, who was in Australia for Byron Bay Bluesfest, didn’t respond to the clip initially, but a last-ditch effort via Twitter yielded the result Kausman was after.

“The night before the concert, I tweeted Joss’ mum, who liked the video so much that she emailed it on to Joss,” Kausman said.

“When I yelled out ‘Sing with Queenie’, from the crowd [Stone] knew what I was talking about and unexpectedly pulled me up on stage.”

Despite initial nerves, Kausman managed to belt out her own version of Some Kind of Wonderful opposite Stone in front of an audience of thousands.

Throat nodules have prevented the former Bialik student from recording her first album, but she hopes to be in the studio later in the year and is already back out performing at various venues around Melbourne.
