A 1.925 hectare piece of land in Furlong Road, Cairnlea, which the community hoped would stay in council hands, could fetch as much as $6.5 million at an auction this Thursday.
Real estate agent Fitzroys, acting on behalf of the council, said the land, originally slated for new council offices, was “suitable to a wide range of development scenarios”.
Meanwhile another piece of council-owned land in Keilor Park deemed to have no community benefit will be also sold.
The 1299-square-metre plot on the corner of Zagreb Court and Swan Street has been deemed “surplus to council needs”.
Council chairman John Watson said there was an adequate number of parks in the area and the sale of the land would enhance community infrastructure.
“This land has no strategic significance to council and is not used for a purpose associated with the provision of a council service,” a council report found.
“[It] currently detracts from the character of adjoining streets and requires ongoing funding for its maintenance, with little resulting community benefit.”
The council will seek community feed- back on the proposed sale. Residents can make a written submission to the council on info@brimbank.vic.gov.au by May 16.
