Sunshine self-defence class takes on extra meaning

Brimbank women can learn how to defend themselves as part of a free class in Sunshine next Tuesday.

Western Metropolitan MP Cesar Melhem has been planning the class for more than four months, but he said last month’s stabbing death of Fiona Warzywoda in Sunshine’s CBD meant it was more relevant than ever for women to know self-defence techniques.

“The class teaches both practical moves and offers advice for women of all ages to better defend themselves,” Mr Melham said.

The recent attack also led to prominent Victorians calling for better support for family violence offenders and their victims.

“We’re spending a lot of money working with groups that assist victims of family violence so that they can have alternatives in terms of where they live and their future,’’ Premier Denis Napthine told the

Star Weekly.

‘‘We’re also spending significant money dealing with perpetrators.

“That’s always controversial because there’s a lot of people who think money should only be spent on victims, but I believe that if you want to prevent family violence you need to work with men who have a tendency to be violent and help them deal with their behaviour to try and prevent it.”

Brimbank’s Inspector Chris Gilbert said men should be taught from a young age not to resort to violence.

“We need to go back to before the offending even starts,” he said.

“What are the messages we’re giving to young men going into adolescence about women?’’

The self-defence class is at the Visy Cares Hub in Harvester Road, Sunshine, from 7-9pm on May 13.

Places are limited. Bookings can be made by calling 9689 6536.
