EDFL: Keilor demolishes Saints | Taylors Lakes win

Keilor got the jump early and went on with the job to demolish Northern Saints by 52 points in the premier division of the Essendon District Football League on Saturday.

Keilor kicked eight goals in the opening term at Charles Mutton Reserve to take the game out of the Saints’ reach.

The Saints rallied late with six goals in the final term, but it was too little too late as Keilor won 19.22 (136) to 12.12 (84).

Keilor coach Mick McGuane praised his team’s start.

“We jumped into the game and started well which has been a positive this season. We also did it against Airport West,” he said.

“It gets you into the contest and you can really pursue it for the rest of the game.

“The honesty on the coalface was good and we had pretty clean hands and were able to find space to get the ball out of the contests.” McGuane highlighted his side’s goalkicking as one area the players needed to improve on.

“Conversion [they kicked 5.13 in the second and fourth terms] must improve. Better teams will take their chances.

“We had 10 individual goalkickers, which holds us in good stead and makes us less predictable.”

McGuane said the early lead his team built allowed him to rest senior players, including, Dylan Joyce and Jamie Papalia, in the last term.

“We have a six-day break and play Strathmore on Good Friday and they’ve started the season well, too,” he said.

“One team will remain undefeated on Friday night.”

In division 1, Taylors Lakes beat Glenroy 8.18 (66) to 4.17 (41), while East Keilor, Roxburgh Park and Moonee Valley were among the winners in division 2.
