PORT MELBOURNE: Fires lit while firefighters in building

An arsonist continued to light several fires in a Port Melbourne aged-care home while firefighters worked frantically to put out another fire in the building.

Commander Frank Stockton from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade told radio station 3AW that while crews were putting out a blaze on the second floor of the building in Tom Hills Court, Port Melbourne, several other fires were being lit around the complex.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belle Nolan said the fires were probably started in several communal areas between 11.30pm and 11.45pm on Sunday.

About 40 residents were evacuated from the building but returned to their units shortly after the fires were extinguished. No one was injured in the blaze.

Anyone with information is asked to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
