LITTLE RIVER: Oakleigh man killed by passing truck

A man survived crashing his car into trees on the Princes Freeway only to be killed by a passing truck.

Police say the 23-year-old was driving through Little River towards Melbourne about 12.15am on Friday when he crashed into trees on the centre median strip.

The Oakleigh man is believed to have got out of his car and stepped onto the freeway where he was hit by a passing truck.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the man died before paramedics arrived.

Victoria Police acting sergeant Troy Morrow said the man’s death was a tragedy.

“The truck wasn’t speeding and the male was just walking on the freeway, and the truck had no hope of seeing him,” he said.

Sergeant Morrow said road conditions were extremely poor due to heavy rain and pleaded with motorists to drive more slowly in wet conditions.

The man’s next of kin have been notified and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The male truck driver was not injured.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the crash, or who saw the car in the lead up to it, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
