Soy saga heads to St Kilda

A Sunshine filmmaker has taken another small step towards glory.

After winning the best documentary, cultural diversity and people’s choice awards at last month’s Setting Sun Short Film Festival in Yarraville, Andrew Robb’s five-minute production, Tofu Man, has been nominated for this year’s St Kilda Film Festival.

St Kilda’s festival, the country’s largest and oldest short film extravaganza, is an Academy Awards-qualifying event.

Robb said he was blown away by the response to

Tofu Man, which was shot on a mobile phone, after its screening in Yarraville.

‘‘The film really seemed to find broad appeal and I had a lot of great comments,’’ he said.

The film, Robb’s first documentary, is a candid portrait of Vietnamese refugee Duc Nga.

Nga, who came to Australia after being orphaned aged 14, built a tofu-making business in a converted milk bar across the road from Robb’s Sunshine home.
