An 18-year-old woman has been charged over the death of a newborn baby found hidden in bushes in St Albans.
The baby was found wrapped in a blanket under a tree, not far from a school crossing earlier this month.
Police questioned an 18-year-old about the baby but never confirmed whether she was related to the child or if the newborn was a boy or girl.
It’s not known how long the baby had been left on Ruth Street before being found.
The woman, from Deer Park, has now been charged with child homicide, a police spokeswoman said.
The offence is, in effect, equivalent to manslaughter.
She is expected appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court later on Friday.
