The cricket nets in which 11-year-old Luke Batty was killed by his father last month have been taken down.
Tyabb Cricket Club president Sam Taranto said the nets were removed from Bunguyan Reserve two weeks ago at the request of club members, who saw them as a painful reminder of Luke’s tragic death.
“Most of the junior families preferred that they were removed,” he said.
“They felt uncomfortable about the area.”
Luke Batty was attacked by his father Greg Anderson with a cricket bat and knife after junior cricket training on February 12.
Mr Anderson, 54, was shot by police soon after and died in hospital the following day.
Mr Taranto said a celebrity T20 match would be hosted by the club this Sunday in Luke’s memory, with money raised going towards the building of new practice nets.
“The community and club are closer together than they’ve ever been, but we wanted to end the season on a positive note,” he said.
