Brimbank residents are being urged to contact police if they receive any phone calls from people seeking donations for Mercy Palliative Care in Sunshine.
A Werribee man was called after business hours by a person asking for credit card details and weekly donations up to $40, which would begin in April.
He said he believed the caller as from MPC but could not confirm it.
The caller also said the reason they were seeking money was because the palliative care service’s patient numbers had risen from 1200 to 1600. MPC presently cares for 500 patients.
The patient was able to cancel his credit card in time.
Brimbank Police’s Detective Sergeant Brad D’Elton said it was likely more people had been effected, and it was important Brimbank residents were wary of phone scams.
“In no way should people provide credit card details over the phone, especially for these type of calls because there is no way of knowing who they are,’’ Sergeant D’Elton said.
