Internationally renowned artist and former Sunshine resident John Kelly wants his home town suburb to have a cow.
Not content with his famous series of cow sculptures being on show in far flung places such as London, the Glastonbury Festival and France, Kelly has approached council about creating a “legacy artwork” for the suburb: a new bronze sculpture entitled Man Lifting Cow.
Wanting to acknowledge his roots – his parents still live in Sunshine – Kelly’s new project Man Lifting Cow would be the latest in his series of cow sculptures, alongside “Cow up a Tree” which has been exhibited at the Docklands and in France, and 3 Cows in a Pile in London.
The sculpture would be placed in a prominent Sunshine location.
Kelly has offered council a substantially discounted price for the works which is expected to be a landmark work for the state.
Council will apply for a state government Victorian Public Sculpture Fund grant this month, which provides funding of up to $100,000, and seek philanthropic funding, to go with its own contribution.
