In a bid to beat Sunday’s extreme heat, a man and a woman, both in their 20s, were at the WaterMarc aquatic centre at Greensborough when they knocked heads as they jumped into a pool about 7.30pm.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said paramedics, the fire brigade and pool staff had to help revive the pair, who were unconscious and not breathing when they were pulled out of the water.
They were taken to the Austin Hospital, where both remain in a critical condition.
A manager at WaterMarc confirmed the accident happened at the pool, and said staff had successfully handled the situation. She refused to comment further.
WaterMarc is a $42 million Banyule City Council project, and is managed by Belgravia Leisure.
WaterMarc claims to be the largest aquatic and leisure facility in the northern region of Victoria. It has several indoor pools and waterslides.
