Lunar New Year festivities were disrupted by a deliberately lit grass fire near the Quang Minh Buddhist Temple at Braybrook on Thursday night.

Young people were seen running from the blazing park, off Duke Road, about 6pm.

MFB spokesman Trevor Woodward said 27 firefighters in seven trucks took nearly two hours to bring the fire under control.

“Although the fire would have looked quite spectacular, there were no buildings threatened and the fire was moving slowly in a northerly direction,” he said.

“The lack of strong wind allowed the MFB to confidently get ahead of the fire front to halt its progress.

“Most crews were on scene for just under two hours. The fire burned about two hectares in total.

“A fireworks display at the temple that was planned for later that evening was allowed to go ahead provided additional fire watch wardens were in attendance.”

Melbourne’s temperatures are forecast to reach the high 30s on Friday and Saturday, before a cool change on Sunday.
