EPPING: Teenager charged over fire

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with lighting a blaze during a period of fire danger following a grass fire in Epping last week.

The Broadmeadows boy and another teenager, a 16-year-old girl, turned themselves in on Tuesday afternoon, police said. The pair were questioned by police.

Two people were seen walking through grassland shortly before a fire broke out at Harvest Home Road in Epping at 3pm last Tuesday.

The blaze was quickly extinguished and did not damage nearby properties, but was declared suspicious.

Police released CCTV footage on Tuesday taken from a BP service station at the corner of Harvest Home Road, showing two people they hoped could be identified.

The 15-year-old was charged with one count of criminal damage by fire, intentionally and recklessly causing a bush fire, and recklessly lighting a fire in open air during a period of fire danger.

He was bailed by police, and is expected to appear at a children’s court at a later date.
