The level crossing at Anderson Road in Sunshine was removed on Monday marking the first time trains travelled through the intersection without disrupting traffic.
Inspecting the new road-over-rail bridge, Premier Denis Napthine said more 25,000 cars on Anderson Road will have a smoother journey.
The removal of the Bendigo line level crossing a few hundred metres up Anderson Road near King Edward Avenue is due for completion in the middle of the year.
Meanwhile, the RACV has called on two Brimbank level crossings to be removed as soon as possible.
Calling for the state government to remove five crossings per year over the next decade, Manager, Roads and Traffic Dave Jones said crossings at Furlong Road and Main Road East in St Albans were on a list of 50 that needed to go.
“Level crossings have become a major safety risk and cause of frustration on Victoria’s road network,” he said. “(They) have outlived their usefulness in many parts of Victoria’s road network, and the safest option is to keep road and rail apart at all times.”
A RACV survey in 2012 revealed Main Road East and Furlong Road was the second and fourth most complained about crossings respectively.
