Preparing to tackle his second 14-kilometre City2Sea charity run, Deer Park resident Dean Henneman has inspiration all around him.
In the middle of last year, the St Albans footballer’s pregnant sister, Stacey, was diagnosed with cancer and his nephew, Reggie, was born at 29 weeks so his mother could start treatment. Both are now doing well, but it was a case of touch and go.
“There was a chance one of them wouldn’t survive,” says Henneman, 29, who was lucky to have the ear of cancer survivor and former Essendon AFL premiership player Adam Ramanauskas, who is married to his cousin.
“The message he gave me was about acceptance and creating positive vibes . He’s a great role model,” Henneman says.
Henneman, who will raise money for Cancer Council Victoria, hopes to improve on the $2000 he collected last year. The run on Sunday, November 17, starts at the Arts Centre and finishes in St Kilda.
