SHEPPARTON: Two die in plane crash

Two people have been killed after a plane has crashed and burst into flames near Shepparton Airport in north-east Victoria.

Victoria Police confirmed two men had died after the plane crashed just outside Shepparton near the Goulburn Valley Highway around 2.20pm.

The men have yet to be formally identified, police said.

A Civil Aviation Safety Authority spokesman Peter Gibson said the aircraft involved was a Lancair Legacy plane.

He said the plane was a kit-built light aircraft. It crashed shortly after take-off.

The plane crashed 100m south of the entrance to the Shepparton airport.

The Goulburn Valley Highway has been closed in both directions.

A local pilot ‘Keith’ told 3AW that the plane had burst into flames.

“The take-off was normal until it got about 100-foot above the ground,” he said.

“Then it pitched up rapidly, dropped its right wing, turned right angles to runway, crashed through the perimeter fence … and then caught fire.”

Vicroads said the Goulburn Valley Highway has been closed in both directions near Raftery Road and advises drivers to take another route.

Traffic is being detoured via Kialla Lakes Drive, Archer Road and River Road.

VicRoads and emergency services are on site and directing traffic.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The accident follows two plane crashes in the past week, one in Victoria, one in New South Wales. Both were fatal.
