OAKLEIGH: Death not suspicious, say police

LATEST: Police are not treating as suspicious the sudden death of a young man who was found on a sports track in Oakleigh on Tuesday morning.

However, investigators are still awaiting the outcome of a post mortem on the 27-year-old old.

Police earlier said they were looking for a sharp-edged weapon in relation to the investigation.

Homicide squad Detective Senior Sergeant David Snare said the man was found about 6am Tuesday and was possibly of Asian descent.

His body was found close to a school tennis court and the Oakleigh Chargers Football Club.

Police cordoned off most of the Drummond Street side of the DW Nicholl Reserve at Warrawee Oval on Tuesday morning. The reserve is between Oakleigh Primary School and a cemetery. Detective Senior Sergeant Snare said police had contacted the school and that the children would be offered counselling.

He said the man’s body was found by a staff member from the Active Lifestyle gym, located next to the sports track.

“They were walking through the walkway there, and once it was identified he was deceased, they called the police,” he said.

He would not comment on the man’s injuries, but said a pathologist was at the scene. He would not say whether the man, who was wearing shorts and runners, was a regular jogger at the oval.

A passer-by said he had a passing acquaintance with the deceased man and that the man was a regular in the mornings.

Police cordoned off most of the Drummond Street side of the oval, even though the body was found closer to Warrigal Road.

Police and State Emergency Services also attended the scene. The SES was assisting police with a search for evidence throughout the day.

But Tuesday afternoon police issued a statement announcing that the death was not suspicious.

Local detectives will prepare a report for the Coroner.
