EAGLES NEST: Teen drowns as group swept away

The drowning of a 16-year-old boy has left a small town in South Gippsland in shock.

Mirboo North resident Leighton Erbs died after being swept off rocks near Inverloch on Saturday afternoon.

Tributes were pouring in for Leighton, who was standing with friends on a rock shelf at Eagles Nest, east of Oaks Beach, when a wave swept the group into rough seas just before 1pm.

Life Saving Victoria spokesman Greg Scott said he understood the teenagers were not planning to swim but were engulfed by the force of the wave.

Eagles Nest is “highly hazardous” according to Surf Life Saving Australia. Its Beachsafe website says the area experiences strong rips and big waves.

Police and paramedics performed CPR for nearly an hour on Leighton after he was dragged back to the beach, but they were unable to revive him.

Friends and loved ones took to social media to express their grief. Many mentioned his infectious smile and his love of skateboarding.

“You were an absolutely inspirational character. This is truly heartbreaking,” posted one female friend.

Two other teenagers were taken to Wonthaggi hospital on Saturday and treated for shock.

Mr Scott praised the efforts of a 15-year-old off-duty volunteer lifesaver who helped in attempts to rescue and resuscitate Leighton. “The volunteer’s efforts were remarkable,” Mr Scott said.

With summer fast approaching, Mr Scott said the young boy’s death was an unfortunate reminder of how dangerous beaches can be.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
