Ombudsman to check on bakeries’ dough

Wages at north-west bakeries will be scrutinised by the Fair Work Ombudsman as part of a campaign to ensure workers are being paid correctly.

Inspectors will audit 160 independent and franchisee-operated retail bakeries throughout the state, including stores in
St Albans, Sunshine and Taylors Lakes.

Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the retail bakery sector was a persistent source of complaints, many from young workers.“We are conscious that this industry employs a significant number of young workers, often as apprentices who might be working in their first job.

‘‘They can be vulnerable to exploitation because they’re often not aware of their workplace entitlements or where to go for information and assistance.”

The Fair Work Ombudsman will also inspect a “handful” of childcare centres in Brimbank.
