Katrina Bourke, of St Peters Primary School in Sunshine, has been nominated for the national excellence in teaching awards.
The deputy principal, who has taught at St Peters for three years, said she was excited for the whole school community.
‘‘I was nominated, but I’m part of a team and staff who work hard to build a vibrant school,” she said.
Ms Bourke said her job was about more than educating pupils and included encouraging community participation and getting parents involved in school activities.
“We’ve found that if parents engage, then the kids do better,” she said.
“[The parents] have created a community cooking club. There’s fantastic family involvement.”
The award winners will be named on October 25.
