Green Gully Soccer Club is confident its Victorian Premier League game against a team accused of match fixing was played fairly.
Authorities are investigating claims that the Southern Stars fixed five matches, including an August 31 fixture against the Cavaliers.
Green Gully general manager Raymond Mamo said he noticed nothing out of the ordinary in the club’s 3-0 defeat of the bottom-placed Stars.
“I was at the game and from where I was, there was nothing untoward going on. Nothing suspicious at all.
“It was a hard-fought contest, there was nothing dubious. We heard nothing from the referees that would suggest that either.”
Mamo said his team scored in the 67th minute, followed by two goals in the 88th minute.
The club’s website reported: “It took 67 minutes for Green Gully to finally break the deadlock, but it should have already been at least 5-0 up by that point … Green Gully has made every finals series since 2001, but anything less than a win against the Stars would make finals qualification almost impossible.”
Mamo said he was shocked to learn the Southern Stars’ coach and several players were allegedly involved in throwing matches for money.
“I had no idea about this until it was revealed by the police,” he said.
Football Federation Victoria has declared that all VPL seniors matches involving Southern Stars this season will be recorded as ‘‘no result.’’
