The MFB revealed its latest weapon in the battle against bushfires at the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council conference in Melbourne last week.
It launched a pilot program for a remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that gives emergency services a bird’s-eye view of an advancing fire.

MFB station officer Timothy Wadsworth is pictured showing how the device works. The UAV transmits real-time images to the MFB control unit and to the incident controller via a portable monitor.
MFB commander Will Glenn, who co-ordinated the project, said UAVs would give a more complete overview of an emergency situation.
