Sunshine Baseball Club spin a home-run yarn

THE oldest original sports club in Sunshine hopes to continue its rich history of producing international-level champions as it celebrates its 75th birthday.

Sunshine Baseball Club has been a breeding ground for talent over the years, including Don Deeble, who is considered among the greatest baseballers produced by Australia. After playing his first game for the club as a 16-year-old, Deeble was a regular in the national side in the 1960s.

This year, the Eagles have about 200 players across five senior and seven junior teams.

Junior co-ordinator Glenn Letts hopes to attract new faces through a series of  ‘‘come and try’’ days on August 18 and 31 and September 8.

This season marked the return of another champion, former Australian representative Earl Byrne, in a senior coaching role.

Byrne played juniors with Sunshine before making his mark in AAA competition with the Chicago Cubs.

The club will celebrate its anniversary at the Italia Club in Sunshine on Saturday, October 19.
