Soccer brawl: ‘We condemn this type of behaviour’

THE Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit is investigating an alleged brawl after a soccer match between Sunshine North and Sporting Whittlesea on Saturday, June 29.

Police believe up to 60 people were involved in the melee, including players, officials and spectators, at Larissa Road, St Albans, following a Men’s State League 3 North West competition match.

It’s believed a 19-year-old boy and a 54-year-old man received facial injuries during the melee.

Sunshine North president and player Besnick Kutleshi questioned police claims that players and officials were involved in clash.

“This happened after the game was finished, well away from the pitch,” he said. “We had shook hands and walked off.

“I was in the changerooms when it started. It was not our players, it must have been suppporters. The game was played in a perfect manner, no malicious tackles or anything.

“We condemn this kind of behaviour, we’re happy to work with police with any kind of information they need.”

While Mr Kutleshi questioned Sporting Whittlesea’s history with melees, he said reports that at least 60 people were involved were completely over blown.

“We wouldn’t even have 100 people at the game,” he said.

“It was something between 10 to 20 people. In no way was it a brawl, it wasn’t that bad. The police were called and it was sorted out quickly. The whole thing only lasted for a few minutes.”

Mr Kutleshi said he could not confirm reports a Sunshine North club official had been struck in the back of the head.

“We’re working with police. If any of my players were involved I’d happily send the police around to his house. We are only too happy to assist.”

Police continue to investigate and wish to speak to anyone who has further information about the incident or who may know the identity of any of those involved.

The Weekly is seeking a response from Sporting Whittlesea.
