VPL: Crucial week for Green Gully Cavaliers

GREEN Gully will be desperate to make up for lost ground when the Victorian Premier League returns after the Queen’s Birthday break.

The Cavaliers will play three games in seven days in what is a crucial period for the club.

The early-season strugglers have already parted company with coach Dean Hennessey and sit fourth-last on the ladder with just five points.

The Cavaliers can kick-start their season in an away trip to lowly Southern Stars on Saturday night.

Then the last 19 minutes of the Cavs’ abandoned match with Richmond Eagles will be played at Kevin Bartlett Reserve at 8pm on Wednesday.

The original fixture at the same venue was called off after 71 minutes because of lightning. The Cavaliers were leading 2-1.

The third game of the hectic seven days will see the Cavs host Bentleigh Greens on June 22.

Melbourne Knights will face long-time foe South Melbourne away at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday.

The Knights, fifth with 14 points, have finals on their mind and a strong showing against third-placed South will validate their claims.

In state league 1, Western Suburbs swooped on top spot ahead of the week’s break, but their resolve to hold on to the position will be tested when second-placed Heidelberg United arrives at Ralph Reserve on Sunday for one of the most anticipated matches of the season.

Sunshine George Cross and St Albans Saints are in the title mix, trailing the top side by two points.
