WRFL: Deer Park’s goal barrage crushes Yarraville Seddon

DEER Park remains undefeated in division 1 of the Western Region Football League after a 91-point win over Yarraville Seddon on Saturday.

The Lions recovered from a slow start against the Eagles, who were promoted after winning the division 2 grand final last year, to score a comfortable victory.

But it was Yarraville Seddon which impressed early. The Eagles led by four points at quarter-time in an entertaining first term that saw both teams kick five goals.

But from there Yarraville Seddon managed only five more goals for the game, as Deer Park slammed home 19.

The Lions had 14 goalkickers, with Kwame McHarg, Shylo Smith, Chris Stewart and Luke Buttigieg all booting three.

Deer Park coach Marc Bullen was impressed with his team’s response after quarter-time.

“We got off to a slow start which was a full credit to the Eagles,” he said. “They really took it up to us in the first quarter.

“They taught us a few of the basics, what to do well, and used it a lot better than us early on. But after that we put some other structures in place and started winning the ball at the stoppages and using it better going forward.”

In other games Sunshine barely broke a sweat as it completed a 200-point win over North Footscray, whom they kept goalless for the afternoon.

St Albans got home by 11 points in a thriller against Port Melbourne Colts, booting seven goals to one in the last quarter to snatch victory after trailing all day. Albion was beaten but not disgraced against Altona, going down by 43 points.
