WRFL: Dragons breathing fire after second victory

SUNSHINE Heights is two from two after a 24-point win over Braybrook in division two of the Western Region Football League on Saturday.

A six-goal second quarter was the catalyst for the Dragons’ victory, the 28-point lead established by half-time proving too much for a determined Bombers outfit to overcome.

The first quarter was relatively even, with Braybrook trailing by six points at the first break. But the Bombers were comprehensively beaten in the second, falling nearly five goals behind as Sunshine Heights worked its way on top.

Braybrook was then left to rue several missed opportunities in the third quarter, kicking six behinds from nine scoring shots to cut the margin by just two points.

The Bombers won the final quarter with six goals but the Dragons had the answers, kicking 5.4 to keep Braybrook at arm’s length.

Dragons coach Daniel Xuereb said he was happy his players were singing the team song again after a winless division one season last year but noted there was much to improve.

With several key players still to return, Xuereb said the undefeated start to the year was promising. “Our run and carry is a little bit down at the moment so it’s great to be two and zero. It’s very positive from that end.”

North Sunshine was on the receiving end of yet another drubbing, this time at the hands of new club Manor Lakes, which won by 129 points.
