AN eight-goal first quarter was the difference between Keilor and Avondale Heights as the Blues kicked off their Essendon District Football League season with a 15-point win.
It was a high-scoring contest from the beginning, with 13 majors kicked in the first quarter alone. The Blues took a 19-point lead into quarter time and though the Heights remained in touch throughout the day Keilor did enough to hold the lead.

In a quieter second term Avondale Heights got back within nine points but Keilor had the answers at every turn. The final quarter was another shootout with 15 goals kicked, but the Heights’ eight straight was still not enough.
Keilor found plenty of avenues to goal, with 13 players registering a major. Daniel Cooper slotted four and Jason Butty three.
Speaking after the match, Keilor coach Mick McGuane said there was plenty of room for improvement for his side if it’s to be a threat in the premier division this season.
“I was just happy we got a win to be honest,” he said. “We played reasonably good footy against a good opponent that has a lot of good names on their list.”
McGuane said he was impressed with the 21 goals Keilor kicked, given last year’s leading goalkicker Jarrod Garth is yet to return after suffering a knee injury in the season opener on Good Friday.
