VPL: Cavs break their duck, but tough encounter looms

GREEN Gully Cavaliers made a swift return to form in the Victorian Premier League after a horror opening to the season.

The Cavaliers not only jolted Hume City 4-1 at Broadmeadows Valley Park on Saturday, they got back some all-important goal difference lost seven days earlier.

Striker Tom Cahill found the back of the net twice for the Cavs, while Sean Harding and Jeffrey Fleming were also on target in a game that will be remembered for coach Dean Hennessey’s first league win in charge. The Cavs face a stern test against the Oakleigh Cannons at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday at 3pm.

In other results, Keilor Park ran riot in a 5-0 road win over LaTrobe University in the men’s state league 2.

Sydenham Park had a significant 2-0 win away from home over Altona East Phoenix.

Goals were the order of the day in men’s state league 3. Cairnlea, down to 10 men for most of the day, won a 4-3 thriller at home over Moreland United. North Sunshine Eagles punished Geelong 3-1 at Larissa Reserve, but Westvale was on the wrong end of a 6-3 scoreline against Hume United.

Western Eagles got the better of Maribyrnong Green 2-1 in state league 4.

In state league 5, Brimbank Stallions beat Altona North 3-2 and Spring Hills FC got the only goal in a game against Laverton Park, but Balmoral was beaten 3-0 by a Joe Spiteri-led Point Cook. — Lance Jenkinson
