Re: Forty winks between siren calls (Weekly, March 26):

Callers can assist only by calling when they actually have a genuine medical emergency. At least 50 per cent of ambulance calls are for minor ailments that do not require any ambulance management. And understand you do not get seen quicker at hospital if you go by ambulance. You merely increase the chances that an ambulance is not available for the genuine emergency. For those with minor ailments who say they have ambulance cover so they may as well use it, I say do you have house insurance? Well let’s burn your house down. You have the cover, may as well use it.

Over the weekend, ambulance stations were staffed by one paramedic only. Sending overworked paramedics out to treat seriously ill people is one thing, but to expect them to do it alone is a disgrace.
