Visions of a green Brooklyn

THE transformation of Brooklyn has begun after Brimbank Council approved a new development, marking the start of the Brooklyn Evolution Project.

The application for a cafe, caretaker’s house and two warehouses was unanimously approved by Brimbank administrators last Tuesday night.

The plan had been signed off on by VicRoads and no objections were received.

But the proposed caretaker’s house was considered “sensitive use” by the Environment Protection Authority and an environmental assessment must be undertaken before construction begins.

Council administrator Jane Nathan said the application set a precedent for future developments in the suburb.

Ms Nathan said the site, at 720 to 730 Geelong Road, encouraged commercial retailing and light industry, as development in the area moves away from the heavy industrial use which has long polluted Brooklyn.

“What this area needs is quality applications that will enrich the area and I believe this application fulfils those needs,” she said.

“We want to see an environmentally friendly move towards implementing the Brooklyn Evolution project. This will ensure this site will be given the opportunity to expand and grow. It will also encourage other applications of this nature to be put forward.”

Brooklyn Residents Action Group secretary Bert Boere welcomed the development. “We want to see a mix of lighter and more modern industries. It’s definitely a step in the right direction to make Brooklyn a greener area, with cleaner practices and more modern industries.”
