Pitch battle for police, homeless

A CRICKET match has helped improve relations between police and homeless youth.

The 20th Man Fund’s annual ‘Cops vs Kids’ Twenty20 game was played last Wednesday at Footscray’s Merv Hughes Oval.

Merv himself (pictured with Sage, 11) and fellow former Test cricketer Rodney Hogg led a team of youths against 11 police officers led by Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton.

Founder of the 20th Man Fund Les Twentyman said the match provided a chance for young people to see police in a different light.

“Sport’s a great way to help kids from troubled backgrounds reconnect with the community.”
