SUNSHINE station will have armed Protective Services Officers from tomorrow in a move that will make it the 30th station to get nightly patrols.
Youth worker Les Twentyman lent his support to the move, saying it was a ‘‘step towards’’ increasing security.
Under the scheme, PSOs will patrol the station from 6pm until the last train every night of the week.
The coalition made a $212 million election promise to post 940 PSOs at every metropolitan train station by November 2014.
So far the state government has recruited 259 PSOs.
PSOs have powers to take weapons and detain anyone who threatens public safety.
Acting Premier Peter Ryan said it was ‘‘fantastic’’ to see one of Melbourne’s busiest stations patrolled by PSOs.
