A Keilor Park junior soccer team is off to the nation’s capital in July to play in a global competition.

Coach Jimmy Gorevski says his Keilor Park Eagles under-10 team is ready to take on some of the world’s best at the Kanga Cup tournament in Canberra.

The players already have two cup wins behind them: last year’s Mill Park Cup and Keilor Park Cup.

The Kanga Cup, initiated in 1991, is the largest international youth football tournament in the southern hemisphere and has the mission of “uniting youth through football”.

It’s open to clubs and schools, and teams have come from the US, Europe and Russia.

“Most of these boys have been with me for three years,” Gorevski says. “I’ve had the pleasure of watching them grow and develop, not just as footballers but as young boys.

“They never cease to amaze me with what they can do once they put their minds to it.”

Team manager Maria Gaetano says the 13-member Eagles “are like brothers”.

“They’re a great little team, very supportive of each other. We think they’ll do well,” she says.

Parent Barb Fonianis says the club will work on a variety of fundraisers to get the team to Canberra.

“It’s an expensive exercise, about $2000 per family, so we’re running a few fundraisers to get them there.”
