Metro honours for WRFL stars

Nine of the Western Region Football League’s elite players have been selected in the Vic Metro’s 47-man squad ahead of a representative clash with Vic Country next month.

The WRFL’s strong representation comes on the back of a three-point inter-league triumph over the Ballarat Football League at the Whitten Oval last month.

Matt Dean, Werribee Districts captain, was rewarded with Big V selection after claiming best-on-ground honours in the inter-league game.

WRFL captain Murray Boyd, who is also skipper of Spotswood, starred on the day to warrant his selection.

Others who impressed the Vic Metro selectors included Deer Park duo Jase Perkins (WRFL’s leading goalkicker) and Tim Quick, Albion midfielder Josh Bench, St Albans stalwart Tim Jenkins, Sunshine goal sneak Daniel Castellano, Hoppers Crossing defender Braden Ferrari, and Wyndhamvale onballer Brian Graham.

Even the Vic Metro coaching staff will have a heavy western suburbs influence.

Footscray hall of famer Brian Royal will coach the side, while former Sunshine Kangaroos coach Brett Jacobs will be his assistant. Jacobs was a Vic Metro assistant in last year’s 84-point win over AFL Queensland.

The Vic Metro players will train together for a month before the selectors cut the squad to 23.
