Deer Park tunes up for finals with win over Sunshine

Deer Park continued to power towards the Western Region Football League finals with an 85-point win against Sunshine at the weekend.

The Lions were forced to fight hard early with a point separating the teams at quarter-time and half-time.

But Deer Park found its range after the main break and was able to dominate the contest both offensively and defensively.

The Lions booted 14 second-half goals while giving up just four behinds to secure the 19.10 (124) to 5.9 (39) win.

Deer Park full forward James Wong was at his best with six goals, while around the ground Kwame McHarg was impressive.

For Sunshine, Michael Clark fought hard and finished among the Kangaroos’ best players.

Deer Park is undefeated on top of the WRFL division 1 ladder, six points clear of Hoppers Crossing.

Caroline Springs kept its division 2 finals hopes alive with a gutsy win against Yarraville-Seddon.

The Lakers led at every change, with Dean Galea and Lewis Tudor outstanding for the home side. Up forward, Sherif Mohamed continued his good form with three goals in the 13.15 (93) – 12.8 (80) win. Mohamed has kicked 10 goals in the past three weeks.

Saturday’s win means the Lakers are a game outside the division 2 top four. They take on the seventh-placed Glenorden this week.

In other round 13 results, West Footscray defeated Manor Lakes, North Footscray smashed Sunshine Heights, and Wyndhamvale was too good for Glenorden.

In division 3, Albanvale remains on top of the ladder following a 64-point win against Sanctuary Lakes.
